ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

The Winter of 2005/2006 has been the worst here for 30 years and has caused mayhem, havoc and death in a nation of winter sports enthusiasts - quite a paradox! Me? I hate the winter (as outlined here in a previous personal blog). As I write this, it is not over - rapidly rising water levels, caused by melting snow and precipitation mean that we face the imminent prospect of a rerun of the great summer flood of 2002 - a summer etched into the psyche of every Czech and expat living here at that time. Maybe this year will not be so bad, but no matter - 6 cms or 3 metres - a flood is a flood and brings destruction and misery to all involved.

AHOJ, TADY JE GERIMEDIC, A DVE DEPRIMUJICI BLOGY

THE ENVIRONMENTAL REVOLUTION IS TOO SLOW

What can we do?
Sometimes I feel so frustrated with our apparent lack of consideration for other sentient creatures. Mankind seems bent on destructive ideologies which ignore and indeed imperil other rightful inhabitants of the planet, be they human or animal.

We seem to have learned very little about how to treat each other, despite our innovations and technological advances. For example we still treat others, both human and animal, to the worst kinds of torture and abuse on a scale unimaginable. Having visited a factory farm and abattoir (slaughter house) , I can tell you that mankind, at least as far as animals are concerned, has progressed little from his caveman days. You would be appalled (as I was) to see what goes on in these 'establishments' in the name of consumerism and profit. Allowing the worst excesses of man (as evidenced recently in the Iraqi prison AND by the religious extremists) to be perpetrated on a daily basis.
Otherwise good men, subjecting innocent animals to unbelievable acts of evil in an otherwise 'developed' country (the UK). It really has to be seen to be believed. The terror on the faces of the animals, the screams prior to and during the 'humane' killing process.

The callous treatment meted out to those creatures has convinced me that the current Environmental revolution has been too long in coming and is progressing too slowly. Green issues, be they global warming, pollution, animal rights, corruption etc. need to be addressed with urgency more profound than was evidenced in the previous Agricultural & Industrial revolutions. People, collectively and individually ARE taking action (passively or actively) but it is neither fast enough nor strong enough to counter motives of big business profit, greed, tradition & ignorance.
So what can be done?

There are mainstream activist groups like Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, WWF and PETA, to name only four. They provide a structured framework for people to take positive action.
But will the combined efforts of all these NGOs together with determined people really have enough 'clout' to win the day in time?

With every cause there are fanatics who are prepared to go to extreme lengths to put their points across. These usually never work because they employ violence and terrorist tactics that we rightfully condemn.
Surely the Palestinian cause would have been solved by now had the people had far-sighted political leaders to engage in constructive dialogue, with the help of an active world community, and not bomb their path to a just solution.
Similarly do not the animal rights terrorist prolong the eventual solution of a better understanding of the other creatures that share our planet?

What will it take to get Mr & Mrs Average to wake up and take radical action to change their world for the better? Exactly - we may well run out of time before everyone agrees there is a huge problem before us - the most destructive our world has ever known.
